Dread going to the dentist? Spodak Dental Group has listened to and acted on a large body of research that shows that nature and positive distractions reduce stress and improves health outcomes by creating a living work of art for and around their expansive dental clinic. Studio Sprout designed a variety of garden experiences, specified and tagged native and specialty plants and supervised installation for this 2 acre site. Every patient room faces a native landscape with plants that attract birds and butterflies and a bioswale that filters rainwater from the building’s roof and hard surfaces. The entire site is surrounded with a soft native landscape that supports wildlife as well.
A number of other garden features were included to offer a positive distraction to patients as they arrive and leave the property. A small butterfly garden/ sitting spot is incorporated into the parking area. Patients can walk through a lush tropical garden that provides an intriguing view from staff offices. Staff can eat lunch outdoors next to an edible garden that includes dwarf fruit trees and areas for herb and vegetable plantings. Planting layouts considered color and texture to provide sensory engagement. Over 110 different species of plants create a landscape that provides seasonal interest, color, texture, flowers and soft scents to engage the senses.
